Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture & Construction Sciences Tuskegee University

Tuskegee University was founded in 1881 by notable educator Booker T. Washington. It is one of the oldest and most distinguished Historically Black Institutions in the country. The original campus is a National Historic Landmark, operated by the National Park Service, and is notable for its many student-built buildings. Robert R. Taylor (1868 – 1942) an 1892 MIT graduate was Director of Industries at Tuskegee and is credited with developing the school’s program in architecture and was often placed in charge of the day-to-day operation of the school in the absence of founder and first President, Dr. Booker T. Washington. Many campus buildings built prior to 1932 were designed by Taylor or under his direction, including the original Chapel, Thrasher Hall, Dorothy Hall (now the Kellogg Conference Center), Tompkins Hall, The Oaks (Washington’s family home), and White Hall.

The School offers two degrees, a five year Bachelor of Architecture (NAAB accredited) and a four year Bachelor of Science in Construction Science and Management.

The School of Architecture & Construction Sciences is committed to Washington's philosophy of "educating the hand and the mind together," through strategies of design-build, community outreach and sustainable design.
